Although it didn’t fare well on the Fox Kids network (where it played in an edited format), Escaflowne has a large, loyal following, perhaps because this sprawling fantasy offers the ingredients of classic mecha, sword-and-sorcery, and magical girl adventures. After psychic teenager Hitomi has a vision of a man battling a dragon, Prince Van of Fanelia and a dragon materialize. He slays the monster and transports Hitomi to the mysterious world of Gaea, an odd mixture of advanced technology and medieval culture. A typical romantic triangle develops, involving Hitomi, diamond-in-the-rough Van, and ideal knight Allen Schezar. The saga attains a byzantine complexity when Zaibach emperor Dornkirk captures the trio. He’s at work on a machine that will enable him to create alternate destinies for Gaea. At times the story by Hajime Yatate and Shoji Kawamori seems to be careening out of control, as Hitomi whines and the supporting characters appear, disappear, and undergo radical personality changes. The evil Dornkirk has dispatched murderous doppelgangers, conducted sadistic experiments on kidnapped children, and attempted to subjugate an entire planet. The combination of teenage romance, fantastic robot-suits (”guymelefs”), elaborate battles, histrionic villains, and a world-threatening challenge has made the 26-episode series a favorite among otaku. A feature film, released theatrically in the U.S. in 2002, repeated much of the story. Rated 13 and up for animated violence. –Charles Solomon

Troma Films’ Toxic Avenger series shows its lack of legs with the second sequl to its 1985 hit. Despite a typically absurd premise, which has Toxie battling Satan to save his hometown of Tromaville, the film lacks the go-for-broke gags and gore that made the first two films such guilty pleasures. Part of the reason for this may be that the movie was culled from footage shot for The Toxic Avenger, Part II; Troma heads Lloyd Kaufman (who also helmed the feature) and Michael Herz simply stitched together Part III from the loose ends. While haphazard construction is part of the charm of Troma’s films, the relatively high quality of the Toxic Avenger series raised the bar, and the slapdash nature of Part III is more of a disappointment than a campy source of humor. Tru to their nature, Troma disregarded the drubbing this film received and completed a fourth entry, Citizen Toxie. –Paul Gaita

Akira Kurosawa’s sequl to Yojimbo is more lighthearted and less cynical, a rousing adventure with Toshiro Mifune reprising his role as the scruffy mercenary who becomes an unlikely big brother to a troupe of nine naive samurai. Shuffling into a secret meeting where the proud young men discuss the graft choking their clan, Mifune’s Sanjuro scratches his scraggly beard and distractedly rubs his neck like some common peasant while giving them advice on appearances and truths: “People aren’t what they seem,” he warns the dubious lads. “Be careful.” Naturally they aren’t, and Sanjuro grudgingly adopts the well-meaning but hopelessly ill-equipped heroes, giving the starry-eyed youths a series of lessons in real-world honor and respect while saving their skins from reckless attacks and impulsive plans. It isn’t the subtlest of Kurosawa’s films–the repetitious lessons and speeches delivered to the thickheaded samurai are rather obvious–but it’s one of his most entertaining. Mifune, gruffly at ease with the boys, is hilariously discomforted in the presence of a cultured lady, who sees through his shaggy exterior and imparts a little wisdom of her own. Mifune bounds into action in a number of impressive sword fights–wonderfully choreographed lightning-quick battles in which Mifune leaps all over the widescreen image–but an increasing sense of waste, of futility, hangs over the action scenes, culminating in a tense but meaningless dul of honor. The accompanying trailer on the DVD features brief behind-the-scenes glimpses of Kurosawa directing Mifune through an action sequnce. –Sean Axmaker

Proving that bigger is rarely better, The Mummy Returns serves up so much action and so many computer-generated effects that it quickly grows exhausting. In his zeal to establish a lucrative franchise, writer-director Stephen Sommers dispenses with such trivial matters as character development and plot logic, and charges headlong into an almost random buffet of minimum story and maximum mayhem, beginning with a prologu establishing the ominous fate of the Scorpion King (played by World Wrestling Federation star the Rock, in a cameo teaser for his later starring role in–you gussed it–The Scorpion King). Dormant for 5,000 years, under control of the Egyptian god Anubis, the Scorpion King will rise again in 1933, which is where we find The Mummy’s returning heroes Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, now married and scouring Egyptian ruins with their 8-year-old son, Alex (Freddie Boath).
John Hannah (as Weisz’s brother) and Oded Fehr (as mystical warrior Ardeth Bay) also return from The Mummy, and trouble begins when Alex dons the Scorpion King’s ancient bracelet, coveted by the evil mummy Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), who’s been revived by… oh, but does any of this matter? With a plot so disposable that it’s impossible to care about anything that happens, The Mummy Returns is best enjoyed as an intermittently amusing and physically impressive monument of Hollywood machinery, with gorgeous sets that scream for a better showcase, and digital trickery that tops its predecessor in ambition, if not in payoff. By the time our heroes encounter a hoard of ravenous pygmy mummies, you’ll probably enjoy this movie in spite of itself. –Jeff Shannon
